Yachad’s First Sefer Torah

History was made on Sunday October 3rd as Yachad celebrated their first Hachnasas Sefer Torah.

This Torah, dedicated in loving memory of Debbie Cohen Z’L, the mother in law of Ken Saibel (associate Director, Yachad International) who spent her life as a teacher within the special needs community, was completed with a gala celebration at the Yachad NJ Headquarters along with singing and dancing honoring this beautiful occasion.

The festivities will continue as the Sefer Torah will be used starting Thursday October 7th, at IVDU in Brooklyn, where a street parade will be followed by Krias HaTorah & breakfast.

This Sefer Torah will be used throughout the year at IVDU & at all Yachad Shabbatons & Summer programs.

Rachel Gilder is a student at Queens College and an Advisor for NY Yachad

Avi Feder: What was your introduction to Yachad?
Rachel Gilder: From a very young age. My family hosted people every year for the Yachad Shabbaton and from then on I always knew I wanted to be an advisor.

Avi: Have you been part of Yachad outside of your local area?
Rachel: Yes I went to Cleveland last year for a shabbaton.

Avi: Have you ever run with Team Yachad?
Rachel: Yes, I ran the 5K in Israel and also the Jerusalem Marathon

Avi: What is something you are looking forward to in Yachad?
Rachel: G-d willing I will be able to be on the Rayim Riverdale shabbaton!

Avi: What is your favorite part of a Yachad program?
Rachel: I love talking to the members and just being with them! Hence why I go on the shabbatons.

Avi: Can you tell us about your personal highlight of Yachad involvement?
Rachel: The simchaton by far I think was my favorite!! I was able to meet many new people and that was when I got involved in Rayim Yachad…Its the best division!!

Avi: What is your favorite Shabbos food?
Rachel: I would say potato kugel.

Avi: What is your favorite Yachad swag item?
Rachel: I would say my gloves since I wear them all the time!

Avi: What’s a fun fact about you?
Rachel: Ummm Avi Feder was my NCSY advisor in grade 9

Yachad Raises more than $1 Million on 2nd Annual Giving Day

Yachad Raises more than $1 Million on 2nd Annual Giving Day

Yachad raised $1,371,942 in just 24 hours during its 2nd Annual Giving Day 2017, which began at 3 pm EST Monday, December 11. The organization used the crowdfunding site www.charidy.com for the effort.

These funds will be used to boost the organization’s goal of creating a more empowered and inclusive Jewish future for people with disabilities. This includes day-to-day work to ensure that more programs and inclusive events are offered in our network of Jewish communities.

Ken Saibel, Associate Director of Yachad, said: “We are enormously gratified by the outstanding response from across the country and internationally, to our Charidy campaign. Over 1,700 donors, and many more who contributed just after the 24-hour period, supported our message about the importance of inclusion. Every donation is meaningful, whether from individuals who gave a few dollars from their tzedakah boxes, fundraised off-line or collected from others. It all goes to help Yachad continue its important mission.

I’m so proud of all the staff and volunteers who worked so hard to make this day the tremendous success that it was.”

Funds raised from Yachad branches:

  • New York: $350,004
  • Florida: $40,570
  • New Jersey: $87,344
  • New England: $276,232
  • Chicago: $215,580
  • Los Angeles: $100,581
  • Toronto: $126,961
  • Israel: $101,116
  • National: $73,554

The fundraising campaign’s tagline, ‘We Belong,’ reflects Yachad’s commitment to building communities of connection, strength and friendship – communities where everyone can learn and grow and reach their potential.

“Yachad wishes to thank everyone who donated to this campaign and helped raise awareness about the need for inclusion,” adds Saibel.
