What do all these hands-on activities have in common?

Just another remarkable day in IVDU Boys Upper School.

The students followed a series of clues that were hidden in QR codes and posted on the school walls; they translated Morse code, deciphered a phone number to access a secret menu, and solved a series of puzzles over two weeks that all led up to the grand reveal – an all-day, hands-on learning program!

The day of the program, the IVDU boys engaged in a full day of learning and activities – studying Mishnayis b’chavrusah, checked achicken to see if it was Glatt kosher, and examined fruits and vegetables for infestation. They brushed animal skins to clean them for klaf, extracted carbon from fire for kosher safrus ink, and – in an especially memorable moment – used quill pens and homemade ink to practice writing on klaf!

Parents and supporters of IVDU sponsored parts of the learning event, with the donations going to Yachad and the boys themselves reaping the benefits and joys of a full day of hands-on learning.

The learning day took place right before  the first yartzeit of Sheldon David and was dedicated in his memory. Mr. David was a longtime friend of IVDU; his wife, Marilyn, was the first principal of IVDU, and the Boys and Girls Upper Schools carry her name. During the siyum that concluded the day, the boys of IVDU fondly recalled Mr. David as a good friend who was invested in the spiritual wellbeing of each student and of the school. He held frequent siyumim with the IVDU boys and his last siyum was at IVDU a few short months before he passed away. The boys were proud of the learning they did in his memory.

Hands-on learning? Real-life applications? Instruction that sparks greater interest? ✔️✔️✔️ Like we said… just another signature IVDU Boys event!
